BarNone Monday Sessions

Just came back from the 3rd instalment of the series. I dun think I'd be going for the 4th. I'd seen Cinanmon play last Saturday. Not my cup of tea for alternative rock. And I'm not too keen on Typewriter and Objection Overrule either.

Anyway, Throb pulled out apparently. Quite surprising, considering that I saw the whole band jamming at WeeLee's just on Sunday. Only hit me that they were actually playinig tonight last morning. Or in this case, supposed to. By the way, yeah, Ed The Tech Guy and Melvin, I walked up and down the aisle a few times to check out their keyboardist, Amanda (picture below). Really, you guys act like schoolboys when you talk about her. Her hair looked extremely lovely though, I must admit.

Well, Soul Satisfaction took over the slot and played a set of old school funk and soul numbers. Great stuff. Dharma from Throb did a few numbers with them. Their singer, Sherman was the guy who sold me my Epiphone ES-335 and was still quite dodgy about it. But anyway, it's in the past.

Stoned Revivals played a pretty relaxed set with Syed on Fender Rhodes and laptop. Esam put in his usual soulful standard. The set was pretty down tempo until some percussion emsemble came up and play some Latin percussion piece. Highly energetic stuff but Chung who was there bitched that they were not that good. Well, the last piece they did was kinda messy and quite a few of them were outta time. But it's all cool cuz I'm always outta time anyway when I play.

Chung left during the set. So did Esther. Been bumping into her for the last past week. It's becoming a habit. Haha... Zijia whom I had not seen for ages was there for a short while. Was great to see her again. Shit, some folks don't age a single day since you know them. In fact, they look even younger. Of course, she was trying to act cute by putting up the V signs as much as possible.

Me: "So what are you doing now?"

Zijia: "Working now... after bumming for so long" (V sign)

Me: "That's great. At where?"

Zijia: "Exxon Mobil... " (V sign)

Me: "That's great man! How long have you been there?"

Zijia: "Around 2 months." (V sign) "It's great there." (V sign)

Me: "What the hell are you trying to do with the bloody V sign and all? Acting cute and all that shit?!!?"

Zijia: "But it's kawaii (Japanese for cute) whattt...."

Me: "Kawaii my ass!!!"

Zijia: "I'm more kawaii than your ass..." (V sign again....)

God...

Phorous came up last and played a set of tunes truly inspired by dance and funk music (as suggested by the theme of the night). Once again, I felt that the singer they got still doesn't really suit what they play. He made them sound too R'n'B unless that's what they wanna sound. The addition of the drummer was pretty cool at point though Clifton pointed out that it would be very hard to control the volumes of both live and programmed percussions. Well, he was right. While the beats were pumping, the drummer was filling in with the hi-hats. However, the hi-hats were drowned out. Still, it was still a good set.

Khai and I agreed that though it was interesting, last week's hip hop gig was still better and more fun in fact.
